I try to work in as much Russian stuff into what I’m doing as I can, usually. I spent two years after high school studying Russian language and culture at the University of Victoria, culminating in a summer trip to Ukraine last year. It pops up periodically throughout the book. By the end, I was trying to average two pages a week.ĮB: You seem to have a love for Russian culture. SR: About four or five months, around schoolwork. For more complex sequences, I’d draw out thumbs first, but in general it was a bit of a haphazard process.ĮB: How long did it take you to complete it?
Then, once I’d figured out how many pages the dialogue would fit into, I’d just start drawing. Once I got to a scene, I’d write out the dialogue. I wasn’t really sure where it was even going until maybe the tenth page. From there, a story just kind of started. I’d just got back from a trip to Western Europe, and I wanted to capture some of the feel of those cities (tidy, lazy, comfortable) but with a more classic sci-fi/post apocalyptic twist. SR: The first few pages of the story started out as an experiment in creating environment. Lots of exciting sci-fi adventure, with cyber-punk elements.ĮB: What's the process for you, from the idea to completed page? He turns to his friend Anders for help, and the two of them set out to find what is going on. Unfortunately for everyone, it’s looking like Lunar separatists are using the same model of body for terror attacks on Luna. However, because he has such a lame insurance policy, he’s saddled with a ratty old lunar-made body. Jan is a computer analyst who is living through a tele-operated body while his real body is in the hospital. Earth recently ceased hostilities with Lunar separatists, but the effects of the war are still fresh. SR: Well, it’s set in the far-ish future in the ruins of Frankfurt, the EU’s main transport hub. I’ve been drawing comics for a long time, but this is the first serious one I’ve followed all the way through.ĮB: Tell us a bit about Jan's Atomic Heart. Right now I’m studying at the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary, aiming for a degree in illustration. Simon Roy (SR): Well, I was born in 1988, in Victoria, BC, where I’ve spent most of my life.

I've been showing people the book, and the most common exclamation is "where the hell did this guy come from?" As Jan becomes accustomed to his robotic body, he begins to develop a different perspective on terrorism, and how it has thrown the world into a state of panic.

This storyline becomes increasingly relevant in modern times, as news broke recently of how the automated scientist robot “Adam” formulates hypotheses, designs experiments, and can even make a discovery for its team of researchers at Aberystwyth University and the University of Cambridge.
From New Reliable Press, Jan’s Atomic Heart looks at the future of humanity, and how its survival can be compromised by evolving technology. It’s been described as a cross between Blade Runner and I, Robot.
